Brunch season is back! Want to know how to have fun with your friends without piling on the kg? Back away from the chocolate fountain and read this…

Boffins from Cornell University Food & Brand Lab hit 11 all-you-can eat buffet restaurants in the US to analyse the techniques of healthy eaters. By focusing on the eating habits of 213 randomly selected customers they were able to create some techniques for enjoying a smorgasbord of treats without worrying about the next weigh in.

WINNING TACTIC: GRAB A BOOTH
The more slender diners chose a booth rather than a table close to the buffet. Not only did this mean that it was more awkward to return to the buffet, but as they weren’t facing the food there was less chance of them being enticed into stepping up for second or third portions.

WINNING TACTIC: PORTION CONTROL
Those were rocking a healthy BMI also took a smaller plate. This means that they were treated to instance portion control as the plate would instantly look more full and they wouldn’t feel the need to fill it with any more food.

WINNING TACTIC: DO A RECCE
A healthy eater would browse over the buffet before picking up a plate. This would give them time to think about their selection, take in the raw fish station and salads, and not get in line at the roast meat counter as soon as they arrive.

WINNING TACTIC: DON’T RUSH
Healthy eaters relished the occasion. They put a napkin on their lap, ate with chopsticks, and took their time with their meal. So chew your food slowly and take time to enjoy what the chefs have been slaving over all morning.
